Debbie Ellis

Weavers are told that they generally fit into one of two categories: Pattern and structure or color and texture. Debbie is the latter, especially when it comes to texture.

Weaving with materials beyond the usual is intriguing to her: Metal, grasses, wood, paper, recycled materials.

Also intriguing to her is the connection that we have with our forebears and with other cultures with spinning and weaving traditions. It is extraordinary to her that these movements – the interlacing of one material with another to create a humble cloth, are also foundational to our engineering, aerospace, medical and other modern technologies; and that unless a material is extruded, or is melted and pounded, it is most likely spun and woven.
